I don't know when Network 7 exactly went colour. I suppose all of the daytime ones should technically be on film. But then again so should all of the Crossroads ones up to the mid-1970s. You can't surely just mis-place that many reels! LOL
Though the large number of GH we have there, a total of 18 film cans has to provide hope.

I would love to see daytime GH in any form on DVD. By the looks of that Mike, there are at least 6 consecutive episodes too. If I remember rightly the stories only lasted about three weeks anyway, and as it was only twice a week - thats a full storyline! (if it falls into that 3 weeks of course!). All the same I'd like to see any of them again!

Some people actually like the Crossroads film episodes in black and white better than the video tape colour. I can see what they mean there is a bit of a old B-movie kind of thing about them. But I don't know if the same would be said for these.
I suppose its up to Network if they want to pay to get these telecines converted and release them with the VT. Would be nice if they did. It would make their medical list very impressive with EW10 and Surgical Spirit and the others they've released.

I agree about people liking the B&W versions. I think the couple of eps on Crossroads (ITC Production at the end) looked quite classy in its own way. Same as the Timeslip box-set I've got ...I love the feel of B&W throughout, it creates a whole new atmosphere - the ONE episode in colour looks cheap(?!).

I don't know when Network 7 exactly went colour.
All Australian TV went colour on 1 March 1975. However, colour programmes were being broadcast in the few years beforehand. For instance, the Ten Network's soaps Number 96 and The Box had been experimenting with colour since mid-1974 and some film series on other networks were in colour from 1973. Therefore, it's entirely feasible that General Hospital had been in b/w up to the end of February 1975. You can't surely just mis-place that many reels! LOL
The problem is the same as for Doctor Who - film copies were circulated amongst various broadcasters and they were told to return them to the UK when they had finished with them. If they were returned, they'd have been destroyed after a period of time. The main reason Doctor Who turns is because the broadcasters around the world held on to the film copies when they weren't really supposed to!

But why destroy them if they're the only existing copies?

I think on Missing Episodes someone said they all started to go wrong when Elstree closed and things were shipped to ITC in American and anything deemed not 'worthy' wasn't shipped back when Polygram got involved.
That doesn't of course explain the two missing that were there in 1988 from ITC Xrds wise. They may be in other storage abroad they may like Lenton Lane's ATV paperwork Centre have just been left to be destroyed when the lease on the warehouse ran out.

If what Chris Perry said a while ago these will be from the pile that was with ITC/Granada/Carlton, just with no labels so they have to play them to see what they are.
Although I don't know anything else about them, they might be from the Canada find, but that would be odd, I can't see General Hospital being shown over there due to their own General Hospital so it would have been all rebranded as something else if screen there and there isn't any (not that I can see) evidence this happened.

Hallo, I,m new here, rushed off my feet carrying trays of tea in for Mrs Richardson...damn I've dropped another one!
So many memories here of General Hospital!
Opening Titles and Theme Music
I too adored the snazzy opening theme coupled with the titles of moving stills of ambulances dashing across motorways with aerial shots of Spaghetti Junction and finally zooming in through a black window on the upper floor of the Midland General Hospital as the tune faded...(they used the Luton and Dunstable building for still shots and programme trailer captions I understand)
The original tune was called Girl In The White Dress by Derek Scott and was released as a single on the Pye label although this was a rerecording with an orchestral backing. The TV version was far snazzier with the trumpet, electric organ and wah wah guitar backing and of course the unforgettable zylophone motif. The opening theme was edited for the following days recap at the start. Also there were three different recordings of the theme used for the end credits. More on the music later...
Like a previous poster I used to record the episodes (just to hear the theme music) on audio cassette and still have them with bits of the storylines.
Daytime Serial
Originally transmitted from October 1972 as part of ITV's new daytime schedules starting the same week as Yorkshire TV's Emmerdale Farm and later accompanied by Granada's Crown Court, GH was transmitted at 2pm on Thursday and Friday afternoons.
Primetime GH This went out at either 8pm or 9pm on Fridays and was with an almost entirely new cast! Ver y disppointing though well received. However the new theme tune called Red Alert by Johhny Pearson was no match for the original and did not really fit the original title sequences. These epsisode were complete individual stories of one hour and each epsiode was titled eg "A Stitch In Time".
Daytime Storylines Jany Hart's predecessor was actually a concert pianist and got very close to Dr Bywaters before getting knocked down by a car on discahrge from the Midland General! Jill Gascoigne had the soap fans enthralled as she played two contasting characters.
Another story involved Br Baxter's alcoholic wife turning up drunk at the hospital and causing him embarassment in the early episodes and I remember the first death...a matriarchal motherfigure who did everything for her family who literally took her for granted and she quietly slipped away until Student Nurse Katy Shaw spotted her and screamed for help...Dr Armstrong tried CPR and called the crash team but the patient had gone. There was also a patient who had lost his memory and was unidentified and an episode ended with Dr Getapo coming to his bedside to inform him of a visitor..."someone from the police". There was also a patient who had overdosed and who's daughter was apparently nonplussed by the situation and dismissed Dr Armstrong with the words "well you've pumped her out or whatever you do haven't you and aspirin won't kill her surely?" To which Dr Armstrong barked " If the delay is long enough and the dose strong enough, it most certainly will!" Needless to say being home from school on half-term etc meant that I never found out how such stories continued or ended! Will post some more info/memories later re that Theme Tune !!!!

Hello GlendaB,
Thanks for your memories. The story of Janey (Jill Gascoigne) is one of the most famous remembered storylines, its the one I can remember best.
In my region Granada GH was shown after 4.00 p.m. I remember watching that after school. For some reason Granada chose to be different to other regions in tranmission times.

Hi Maria! Yes I watched the repeats at 4pm also a few years later, too - we really must get this onto DVD somehow: a concerted effort is needed and nostalgia sells!!! Oh, I'm needed in reception!

There appears to be more who remember General Hospital than Emergency Ward 10 around, and it - appears - to have sold okay on sales.

I think that too Mike, if EW10 can be on DVD and sells Ok then surely there will come a time for General Hospital.
Yes GlendaB, wonderful nostalgia certainly sells as I'm sure General Hospital would too.
