Just looking at the information, 257 episodes are missing or incomplete out of a total of 340.

The original daytime series is as someone says the worst hit. Episodes that survive for daytime are: 1, 2, 4, 28, 32, 180, 231, 233, 234, 235, 236, 237, 238, 239, 240, 258.

When it switched to prime time (series 2-6) it fairs better, in fact only 3 episodes are missing from the later run. These are: 01.12.78 Instinct, 12.01.79 Pass The Parcel and 26.01.79 Killer At Large. And 'Instinct' survives on a U-matic tape.

There is enough for a 12, or if they want to be "completest" a 16 episode release of General Hospital - The Daytime Series. I wouldn't mind seeing them. They could follow it up with at least two DVDs of best of primetime General Hospital.

I wonder if there were two archive bosses?

IT seems Elstree material survives far better than Birmingham.

I would love it if they did release a 16 episode set on DVD. I used to watch General Hospital all the time, never missed an episode and really liked it.

It was transmitted in our region at around 4.15 p.m.  Funny, you know I can't remember what time it went out at prime time.

Honey Lane, the "original" EastEnders by ATV is in far worse shape. All of the daytime editions - the full 65 episodes - are wiped.

The earlier evening Market In Honey Lane however has 13 episodes out of 26. Again a 12 disc set of that could be released. Just have to 'omit' the episode Network find the most un-interesting.

Maria-the prime time version went out on Friday evenings, usually at either 7.30 or 8.00.

Me,too, Mike.I was a big fan.Didn't realise that as many as 16 survived from the original daytime run.At least the first episode is still around.I'd be surprised if Network didn't release this at some point-they've put out two volumes of "Emergency Ward 10" so far.I agree that a complete run of the existing daytime episodes would make for a good first volume.

I loved the original 'General Hospital' in the afternoons at 2pm (when I was off school). Good old snappy Mr Parker-Brown, Neville Bywaters, Sister Washington, Staff Nurse Wotsername (Lynda Bellingham). They even let 'Crossroads' borrow the set for a period when they needed hospital scenes!  Loved the blurry, dodgy photographs of ambulances and things when it started with that VERY soapy theme-tune! To me, when it went prime-time, it wasn't quite the same (changed the music to more dramatic stuff - but they kept the dodgy photos!!)

As well as those characters, do you remember Dr Armstrong Freeman ?  He was the older grey haired senior doctor ?

I also remember Linda Bellingham starting off as a student nurse at the very beginning.

I can't for the life of me remember the original theme tune now.I remember being disappointed when they changed it,although I grew to like the new one.
I wasn't aware that Crossroads had used the hospital set.
I think Lynda's character was Hilda Price.

Oh yes Maria - Dr Armstrong was like the BOSS/Administrator whatever...but he was the nice gentle one compared to the evil Parker-Brown - they were a good double-act!

DJB: The original theme was a gentle, but catchy theme with horns, electric piano and that sort of 70's 'wackatoo wa-wa' electric guitar in the background. They ruined the theme on its Prime-Time debut with all that dramatic stuff!
Hilda Price rings a bell too.....she was one of the longest nurses in it (I think).
Are there ANY episodes left? I've searched on You-Tube....but it doesn't even recognise it....all I get is the American series.

The ones listed survive, clips have appeared in programmes, notably ITV50 and After They Were Famous.

I have the theme tune called 'Red Alert' but I don't know whether its the daytime or evening one. Its the B-side to 'Midland Montage' the ATV start-up music.

I'd love to see the series on DVD.  It was before I started watching TV, so seeing a few episodes would be brilliant.

Freeman's utterly beautiful and rather easy-on-the-eye co-Bargee.

That 'Red Alert' could be the evening version. I seem to remember the original afternoon theme being called 'Woman In a White Dress' or something similar ?! (Honest!) I'll look it up. (Think Geoff Love did a version on one of his 70's LP's)

"Red Alert"is the prime time theme.
Freeman,I think Lynda Bellingham's character was only there 1972-3.
