Yes some very happy memories and at one time Ena had some curtains in the living room of her Hammersmith flat in the same material that Jill had in Chimneys in Crossroads when the curtains, walls and suite all matched! I do actually have a picture of Ena with the curtains behind her!

Your story about Eva just gets better and better  Smiley

It'll be another couple of weeks I think, assuming they start back at 1 once they've finished 5 - and they're still on 4 at the moment.  Smiley

Paul,I think it's on ITV3 on Thursday 20th August at 1.30am and 1.30pm.I know you're a big Raymond Bowers fan,so I'll be interested in your verdict if you get to see it.
You're probably aware that it's not well regarded by the fans(including myself, alas)or indeed many of the Upstairs,Downstairs people.

Thanks. Bowers wrote the best of Crossie - with Schmidt and Garfield 'close'. In Schmidt's case his stories/style in 84 matched Bowers style and many times out did him. If you watch again the David/Barbara/Sarah story and the one just before that - Paul Ross/Lisa/Douglas story.

I've no idea about Upstairs, Downstairs -  maybe the producers wanted to try an ep that was 'very different'.  A writer usually only writes what he's 'told' to write!

Not in this case it seems. There's a very interesting section in the "Story of Upstairs,Downstairs"book on this episode.Whilst the producer and script editor rejected or rewrote a number of scripts during the series, there's some dispute as to how this one got through. The said producer and script editor both hated the episode and said they allowed it due to time constraints. The director of the episode said that it was to do with Bowers' intimidating manner. He refused to change a comma.Actress Pauline Collins said that Bowers was present throughout the making of the episode and that the director was very uncomfortable. The backstage drama sounds a lot better than the episode. But you may disagree...

Gives me a picture of Bowers that is more interesting than the one I had before. I will watch the ep at lunchtime - although I've only ever seen bits/bobs of eps as I was never a fan - my opinion on it will be neither use nor ornament! Re Crossroads his scripts/style during the early 80s is SOMETHING ELSE. I've never seen the like since. Although these days it would strike most as too theatrical/articulated and leaning too far from 'reality'.

Ruddy hell! If this was April I'd say it was a practical joke but nope, it's for real! The BBC is bringing back an ITV drama from the 1970s!

I loved the series, got them all on DVD, so I for one can't wait. Jean Marsh will be returning as Rose but as some of the other cast members are still alive lets hope we'll see them too!

 Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked

How very strange!  And yet, rather welcome.  With Marsh and Atkins at the helm, it'll certainly still be worth watching.

Yes I'll be tuning in because as the original creators, and Marsh as an original star, I'm confident they'll make sure the new episodes contain all the things everyone loved about the original series.

I Googled the story and according to the Telegraph, they're keeping the original theme tune as well, but tweaking it to make it more 30s-esque!  It's hoped that the two specials will lead to a full series in 2011.

I too am interested in this news !

I loved the original series and have got the lot on DVD.

Yes, very welcome news.  Interesting that it is for the BBC.  I don't suppose ITV have the budgets these days for quality drama.  They seem to be more interested in reality shows.

Should be good, with both Jean Marsh and Eileen Atkins remaining on board.

I'm wondering if Rose is returning as a housemaid/parlourmaid ?  Only at the end of the series, she had been promoted to ladies maid.

I am looking forward to these programmes.

I've only got the first three series on VHS!!   Shocked Shocked  But I do have 4 and 5 on DVD.  I ought to snap them up while I can.

Rose is returning as housekeeper and Dame Eileen is due to play someone "upstairs", as part of the Holland family.

Hot, There are 2 different versions of the DVD Box Set.  I have the first release by Granada from 2003.  But the later release is by Network, and that is accompanied by DVD extras.  So looks like Network did a good job with the Upstairs & Downstairs Box Set. They can do, when they try !

Rose as Housekeeper sounds good.  Interesting that Eileen is playing one of the `upstairs' family.  I know in the original, she was due to play Sarah, but obviously changed her mind.  Pauline Collins played that part to a `T' I thought !

Yes I have to say the Network ones are good.

Some episodes have commentary from the writers/stars and each series has part of a documentary on it, all five seasons make up the complete doFluidentary. It's a brilliant doFluidentary and very insightful and most of the cast and senior crew contribute towards it. Although Pauline Collins and John whatshisface don't....but Lesley Anne Down who now works in America does.....

It's a shame Network couldn't do such a documentary strand for the Crossroads releases.
