Clearly some people do not age so gracefully. (Mind you aging somewhat disgracefully can be fun!)

I think if you follow this link, it should give you some idea of what he looks like in recent times: http://www.australia-online.com/vbhs/view.php?id=HarryNurmi

I've tried to contact him... (yes, I know I've left the Forum... (Mike, Maria, Paul Ross and the divine Jean no. 9 are in the know about this). Just think of this... as a going away present Wink Cheesy)

Anyway, This is what I sent to him:

"Hi,

This is probably a total long-shot...  But I'm trying to get in touch with Harry Nurmi, an actor (or from the sounds of things, an ex-actor) who once lived and worked in the UK, and played a character called "Barry Hart" in a series called "Crossroads" (a soap opera, shown 3 times a week, set in a Hotel/Motel in Birmingham, in the Midlands, in the UK).

I'm a great fan of the series, and remember the character (& the actor who played him) with much affection.

If you could pass this e-mail on to Harry, I'd be very grateful. It would be lovely just to... correspond with him about his time in the series, and to ask him a few questions about it.

More importantly, I'd be delighted to find that... Harry's actually very happy and enjoying life, back home, in his native Australia :-)

If you could pass this e-mail on to Harry, I'd be delighted. Thank you so much :-)

Kindest regards,

Steve Foster
Leeds, United Kingdom, GB

PS - pic attached. Always nice to put a face to an, admitedly, random name ;-)"

Sadly, I received the following reply:

"This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification. Delivery to the following recipients failed. rlcservices@bigblue.net.au"

So there you go. The link is out of date (but it was fascinating to see a more up-to-date picture of him). A great shame that I couldn't contact him. It would have been lovely to have an online natter with Harry/Barry. I've so many questions stored up for actors/actresses who appeared in Crossroads during that turbulant period of its' history.

And with that... I think it's time I said Au Revoir.

So.. it's Goodbye from me... to the Crossroads Forum... I'll certainly miss you  Cry

Thank you Aston, for the link, and to the people who've e-mailed me this past week re: my decision to leave, and to Maria no. 9  Kiss who asked me to stay. Thank you,  Kiss but No  Sad To mis-quote Nolly:

"I've turned my back on the Forum. My life there is finished."

Best wishes to one and all for the future  Smiley

Kind regards,

Steve F  Kiss

Must be old news, but I see he appeared on the BBC's Kenny Everett TV Show in 1987.

I'll never forget that night at Crossroads, when you said 'all good things must come to an end'. And then you smiled. And I knew that you meant it.

Just been watching his exit from January 1987 - Bomber spots the barman's a bad 'un and out he goes. Seemed a shame. I used to like Barry.

Actually, I don't feel terribly satisfied by Barry's exit... one minute good guy, next tea leaf. I know in real life we all have different facets, but that's not usually the way it works in soap - or at least it didn't back then!

Barry was always the nice/good guy.  I actually don't remember the incident (probably 'cos I didn't watch much in '87 onwards), but I think it was criminal to turn a character bad, just to get shot of him. Why not just give him a story that tempts him to leave the Motel.....a lucrative job offer in Newquay or something?
Same with Diane Hunter - why not just send her off to the USA to see Nicky (again!!!) instead of bumping her off for no reason at all.
No wonder I hate the Smethurst period!!

I was thinking of Diane's death too. She'd been in the series since the 60s for God's sake, they should have shown some respect to the fans, if not the character. And as for Benny naming his Donkey Miss Diane - that adds insult to injury.

I've only ever seen the YouTube version - it all looked very rapidly done. Shame on them.

That was the last ever episode I watched Castlewich!  I thought to myself - that's the end!
Admittedly, I DID watch the final 'feature-length' episode on the Easter Monday. But I didn't feel any emotion whatsoever....it was a bit bland. I was expecting a bit of 'sad music' or a hint of the original theme at the end....no - nothing!
The only thing that pleased me was that Daniel Freeman beat Adam Chance to taking over the Hotel. Nice twist!

And yet he wasn't really bad, was he? I've viewed some more, and he's still very concerned for Sid, seems genuinely sad to leave his friends... it's more interesting than I thought... after all, nicking a few quid from his rich bosses was hardly "Crime Of The 80s"... Yes, I must say, having "watched on" a little, I don't think that Barry ever really became a true Mr Nasty - more multi-faceted. A shame he didn't stay!
