After reading a lot of controversy on another forum about Owen spanking that horrible girl on Corrie the other night. It caused a bit of controversy! (Digital Spy - where else?). I think he did the RIGHT thing to be honest!
What does anyone else think about 'spanking' or 'slapping' kids?  It's such a NO-NO nowadays isn't it?  In fact you can be prosecuted for it!!
I grew up in the 60's - and if I misbehaved...I got a slap on the legs, bum or sometimes the head! I finally realised NOT to be naughty and I grew up to be a law-abiding citizen, I don't require councelling, nor am I mentally-disturbed! A few slaps never did me any harm at all. It taught me a lesson!  Saying "stop it...don't do that" does no good at all!!! Kids need DISCIPLINE!!! Sod the cotton-wool approach!
I don't condone 'beating' a child - that's a different matter!  But a simple smack?  Anyone else's thoughts?......

Agreed Daniel.  Children need discipline.  Slapping and beating are different things.

The outcry is quite ridiculous but typical of Digital Spy, due to majority of its posters having the mental ability of a grapefruit.

The problem is due to such tragic cases such as "Baby P" a stand had to be taken against filthy disgusting people in this world that feel they can treat children that way. We have lost out way and gone so far down the political correctness that now you just cant touch a child.

For years and years it has been proved a BASIC level of pain is shown to teach humans and animals right from wrong. I am never suggesting to beat a child within an inch of their life, burn them with cigarettes or such like but a BASIC level of pain is important. I am sure many will know the old "elastic band on the wrist" routine, people use it a lot when trying to give up something like smoking, chocolate etc. Every time the urge comes you ping the elastic band to give yourself pain, your brain acts and uses that to remember that when you think or want that again its going to hurt so you don't do it. Very simple and has worked.

Most of the up and coming generations now have no clue how to discipline effectively mainly they are parents but still children themselves.

I doubt I will ever change my mind over this and I know from who I am today that knowing right from wrong, getting a slap on the back of the hand or legs taught me basic manners and morals that helps shape who you are when you grow up.

Of course personally with my two little angels, I found out instead of being a mother just get their father to take them and bugger off abroad then you don't have to worry at all!

I see absolutely nothing wrong with giving kids a slap on the legs or backside.  Working with 11 to 16 year olds as I do I can catagorically say that some of them would definitely benefit from a slap or two!  The thing is these days kids are so wised up to the fact that people can't touch them, they know exactly what teachers/parents/carers can and can't do.  A bit of discipline never did nobody any harm, it teaches them right from wrong and if they get a slap they know not to do it again.  I don't condone beating in any way but a gentle slap I have no problem with.

On 'Loose Women' today, the actors who play Owen and Anna in Corrie were on. The subject was all about this, obviously, and the actress who plays Anna was totally against slapping kids.
I was pleased that Jane MacDonald stood up and said something like "I was slapped as a child - and it taught me a lesson....what's wrong with a bit of harmless pain?"
I think Janet Street-Porter agreed too. Interesting to see different sides to it all.
There's such a difference between 'smacking' and 'harming' - that's my point.
Trouble is - kids of a certain age are aware of this now - and can report 'abuse' !
I feel sorry for schoolteachers......in my day we got 'the slipper' and blackboard dusters thrown at us (those wooden ones), and pieces of chalk pelted at us - and a whack on the back of the head! Nowadays - what can they do?

Teachers used to chuck those wooden blackboard dusters and chalk at my schools (Junior & High school) too.  The slipper was used also plus knuckles rapped by wooden rulers.

Oh smack the little brats. In my opinion children should be seen and not heard or even better not seen and not heard.

Yes Rosemary, very wise for you not to spank children, dressed in all that foil and with such big hair, one may be mistaken for Gary Glitter.

I'll never forget that night at Crossroads, when you said 'all good things must come to an end'. And then you smiled. And I knew that you meant it.

My children were seldom naughty as they knew their place. But occasionally my maid Brenda simply had to give them a good slapping but it was all in a good cause. Brenda is dead now sadly after choking on a vol au vent in 1986.
