We interviewed him in November and he spoke for about half an hour with his daughter Katherine. A lovely man with lots of lovely stories of Kathy. He was 83 and died on Christmas day at his daughter Susan's home.

Thankfully his memories were recorded just in time and he speaks of Crossroads very wonderfully and covers the 2001-2002 series as well.

Yes, a great shock to both Mike and I.  As Mike has said, a lovely man with lots of lovely stories.  From the link you can see just how much he genuinely wanted to talk to us.

Very sorry to hear this sad news. I'm sure he was proud to be able to be there for the unveiling of the memorial to Kathy last month. It is also good he will be featured in the documentary and I'm sure his family are pleased he got to do it.

Dear oh dear.  Such sad news.  And on Christmas Day as well.   Sad

As has been said now, though, at least they are back together again.

I've been to John Staff's funeral this afternoon, I was ATV's official representative.  Lovely service for a lovely man.  I was privileged to have been there.

As has been said now, though, at least they are back together again.

Sorry to hear but at least they'e back together again.

Jim, one of John and Kathy's friends said this in his tribute and broke down saying it.  Jim is a really lovely bloke, a real character who talked to us for the Documentary.

So sorry to hear this news. He seemed so healthy in that interview.

He certainly did seem very healthy.  We can say now that John died of an undetected heart problem.  He and his family knew nothing about it.  All so very sudden and a complete shock.

Thankfully just fell asleep and that was that. No suffering at least.

That's bound to be a comfort, that he didn't suffer.

It is Aston.  Had a chat with Jim (whom I mentioned earlier, Kathy & John's friend of many years) after the service and he said in general that you hear about people lingering on, suffering, so they are all very thankful that John didn't suffer like that.

The funeral instructions were `family flowers only' and if mourners wished to make a donation, donations were collected at St. Mark's on the day.

I've found out that more than £600 was raised this way and was split between St. Mark's and Willow Wood Hospice, where Kathy was a patron and where she died from a brain tumour in 2008.

All monies gone to very worthy causes.

Very good to hear that they raised a nice amount for both causes, such a lovely family.
