Okay - so to recap - we found Baschurch. Easy.
Then on the internet is "The Royal Oak" motel, built by Jenner - who at one time claim it was the first location for the crossroads motel.

Now...

On this forum I have done many screen captures that link The Longshoot in Nuneaton to the exteriot chalet designs (as seen through the 1970's staffroom window). But its built of brick
I have also visited Baschurch.... the college is built of brick...

There are a couple of things that point me in the direction that perhaps - even if the producers didn't use The Royal Oak, then some images may have been used to form the basis of the motel...

So - the chalets in episode 126 / 500 etc have stone walls - as does the Royal Oak. If you pause the screen outside the reception you can see what looks like a two story building - like the Royal Oak...

Added to this is the fact that the image above shows the original house on which the motel was built and it bears a fantastic likeness to the "painting" done by Charles Richardson.

(Incidentally the Royal Oak stood on a Crossroads, with a garage forecourt opposite)

"Royal" Oak
"King's" Oak?

Then compare the image of the old building with the modern one attached -

Beautiful inspiration... maybe!

Its highly likey they did do research at a motel but I think only Rex Spencer has the answer on the design. I haven't seen the physical script copy of episode 1 but hopefully it'll have inserts information on it.

The only thing wrong with the Royal Oak is the motel part itself bar the reception area is too far away from the old house.

I'll never forget that night at Crossroads, when you said 'all good things must come to an end'. And then you smiled. And I knew that you meant it.

The flag pole is more in the right place from the description of the opening of the motel, where its clearly in the new motel area, not near the old house as they go from the pole to the motel foyer with a few steps.
