Since mk 2 started do you think it would be still be on air now if mk3 was not done? I mean if it had carry on as mk 2? I liked mk 2 shame they did not keep jill as a returning quest star.

I think had ITV not interfered with it, it would have stood a good chance of still being on today. Killing off Jill was a bad move though. After all, it was an individual soap - about a hotel. There's no other like it. They had chance to have a constant flow of guest stars as well as regular characters that lived and worked there. Ideal situation to me!

Had Carlton been allowed to do the show they wanted and not the daft thing David Liddlement wanted (he's on the BBC Trust, I wouldn't trust him with a Porn channel) then it would have worked.
ITV in London had this idea of making a show called Crossroads, but it must not be Crossroads.
I'm sure had Yvon Grace or whoever came up with the original 2003 revamp (get it back to being "proper Crossroads" as reported in the press weeks before the U-turn to glam) then it would have been a hit again.
unfortunately as we know ITV bosses at that time, from the Granada end of things, didn't want it to be a hit which is foolish - throwing away millions in revenue for what? Flop after flop at 5pm. It might have worked at 8.30pm but with a granada biast network if it had moved to that slot and beaten corrie good god all hell would have let loose.

If the management structure at ITV hadn't gone the way it did and exerted it's authoritah then, yes, I suspect Mk2 would still be on air, bless it.
As far as Liddiment goes, he can get back in his coffin and get lost. (That was cleaned up, by the way)

They should have made it more Crossroadsy by bringing back either more older Crossroads stars from the classic series or created a 'Diane'-type, a 'Jill'-type, a 'Meg'-type etc. Although I suppose the latter was Kate Russells' role.
They could even have had a go at recasting it, as it was it was just Crossroads in name only.

A wasted oppotunity. I would have been more than willing to return darlings to bring a touch of class to the series but Granada wanted pretty young things that struggle to act. Now they have pretty tanned young things in Corrie who can't act and throw temper tantrums when they don't win awards.

Quite right Rosemary - they could have brought back original stars, even if in a temporary 'guest role' for a few episodes. Rosemary could have returned with Chriss in tow, Daniel, Nicola and Darby could have done similar. I'm sure Angus Lennie would have loved to return as Shughie (Was never keen on that Billy as Chef). I'm sure lots more would have considered going back. I would have been willing to turn a blind eye to the return of Diane Hunter!! (Twin sister anyone? )

... or just brought Diane back without a twin sister story. By acknowleging the dreadful mistake of killing her off it was paying Bowman (or whoever it was) respect they didn't deserve. After all Crossroads 2001 ignored the fact that Jill was a Maddingham now - and if she was going to revert to a previous name why 'Harvey', her divorced husband?

They did ask Susan Hanson back - to play Diane - she said no.
Carl Wayne confirmed that on BBC Radio 2, the show that Pau'l O'Grady does now, think it was Ed Stewart at the time.

Interesting twist. It would have been good to see Diane back.

I'm sure I saw in one of her recent interviews that she was indeed asked back to Crossroads, but she reminded them that Diane had been killed off in the original series. I think eventually the series would have had to have been changed slightly with more older characters coming in as the focus was too much on younger cast members.

I think had Crossroads continued it would be doing very well now, I think it's ratings would have increased to 4 million especially given the rise of timeshift viewing now. The advent of the iplayer would allow a whole new audience to see it!
