Just working on the episode guide for July 2001 for the site - and came across two little gems which I somehow missed the first time around.
Number 1. Patrick's brother was called Jack. No seriously "Jack Russell" Number 2. Jake offers (a drunk) Patrick some Chicken Satay in peanut sauce...
"Grind the nuts yourself did you?" slurs Patrick.
I wish they's have kept the Patrick character - and the Jill and Adam characters. There was so much mileage in a Patrick/Kate/Adam/Jill power struggle -and the scripts did have heart and humour. I just wish they'd been allowed to get on with it - instead of the interference - ir the pressures of reaching a certain demographic.

I hated the way they re-invented Jill though. An embittered old bag with a drink problem. The real Jill would have loved the idea that Crossroads was back as a family-run concern. Even if it weren't her family. And Adam Chance a murderer? Pah ...

The Adam Chance thing was unforgivable really.
But Jill - I never saw her embittered - sarcastic yes - lording it - yes -rightfully demanding some respect and not getting it -yes. I didn't so much mind what her character became actually - just a shame she was stupidly killed.
TBH if Patrick and Kate can have an apartment of their own, plus one for Jake and Tracey as 70% owners - it seemed reasonable to me that Jill should be given one apartment as a 30% owner. Clearly Jill should have checked her entitlements in the small print of the contracts.

Someone should interview her just about 2001, its a hoot. We didn't record her really talking about it because well people like Tony Adams is positive about it, you can't get anything positive from Jane about it.
The only thing we did get from her on tape, is how the most expensive cost for 2001 once it was set up was taxi bills. The "kids" as she called them being ferried everywhere.
But off camera, I wish we'd had more time to go into it but we declined the cathedrals offer of an extention on the time so alas not picked up on, the sound problems being worse than mk1 where they had take after take with the sound and other stuff.
ATV have this most wonderful camera if anyone wants to hire her LOL.
On the room issue - I never understood how a share holder wasn't given staff quaters at least, Meg was letting anyone stay, some in her own bedroom.

I'll never forget that night at Crossroads, when you said 'all good things must come to an end'. And then you smiled. And I knew that you meant it.

Oh yes thats it, the sets, she said the new sets were firm. You couldn't move them, which is nice if you're a real hotel but not for cameras. Lots of problems with angles as some walls didn't move and it restricted the shots.
Things like padding scenes because they wanted to see Jill enter the room but they wouldn't hear her until she was in the main part so she had to not speak in the hallway.

Yes writing out Patrick and Louise Dixon were big mistakes. The "older" characters on the whole were very good. To be honest the only cast members I would have written out would have been Des and Minty. I'd have kept everyone else on and the younger characters such as Nicola, Phil and Beena.

Getting rid of Patrick was to Meg-it up a bit I guess, people like the woman in charge - so it seems. Didn't really work although Jane Gurnett in the Nicola Freeman position was rather good.

Jane Gurnett was in Casualty and Dangerfield so I had high hopes for her. 'Meg it up' is a great expression - I shall use that in future when I think certain shows should push the leading lady forward a bit.
Minty, ugh. Was he supposed to be the 'Benny' of the new series? I remember hoping for a 'Diane' but no one seemed to fit the bill.

I think Jane Gurnett was very good and managed everything that was thrown at her. The romances with Billy and Vic for example which may have been a tad unbelievable in some books.

I think Jane's character Kate Russell was the strongest within the cast. And I agree it was a mistake to kill Patrick off like that.

The actor wanted to go off and do Chicago didn't he? But there was no need to kill him off. I'd have written him out for a few months and then brought him back.

Vic Barnes was good. Billy, no no no. One shouldn't get involved with ones hired help, Meg would never lower herself to the chef although as someone recently said, Bernard Booth did have a thing for Meg at the start but she played along then bit his Toque orf.
As for the actor playing Patrick, no he was sacked.

Oh that's a shame him being sacked. I suppose no option but to kill him off then, because I don't think realistically he would have left Kate.

Tracey, Kate, Patrick, Jake, Louise Dixon, Oona, Virginia, Rocky, Vic Barnes and Dave were all good characters in my book. Oona and Dave provided the comic relief factor while Virginia and Rocky did the same but were also capable of doing serious stories too.
Tracy was of course the Motel Drunk - the Sue Ellen - with Jake as JR and Louise Dixon as Kristen Shepherd. All very Dallas in style with Kate and Patrick as the Jock and Mrs Ellie characters really.

Oh Louise was very good, shame she wasn't the real Sarah-Jane.
