I thought it might be interesting for you to see some figures for Crossroads and other programmes from the Thames region;
Crossroads Sex; 65% men / 81% women
Social Class; ABC1 (the one they all aim for £££) 67%, C2 78%, DE 78%
Ages; 16-34yrs 74%, 35-54yrs 66%, 55+ 83%
General Hospital
Sex; 26% men / 61% women
Social Class; ABC1 19%, C2 36%, DE 45%
Ages; 16-34yrs 27%, 35-54yrs 22%, 55+ 38%
Coronation Street
Sex; 37% men / 49% women
Social Class; ABC1 27%, C2 44%, DE 29%
Ages; 16-34yrs 22%, 35-54yrs 30%, 55+ 34%
Crossroads has a higher overall figure, and yes the most elderly audience, but also a better ABC1 figure and youth audience.

That's unbelieveable. It means that Crossroads was the most popular and appreciated of the three soaps by a country mile.

That's the way I saw it too, that Crossroads easily beat the other two hands down, no contest really !

In fact, with those figures, it's no wonder the Sword of Damocles was swinging over Coronation Street at the time!

Just goes to show that Crossroads was the most popular programme on ITV in the 70's. No wonder the high ups within ITV said it was "embarassingly popular". Well, it wouldn't be embarassing if you'd spent some bloody money on it!

I notice the IBA are a bit "two faced" with Crossroads. In the Carlton ditched to 'ATV' collection there are the IBA books, the 1970s editions list Crossroads' awards! And in 1975 they even have Noele on the front cover, and a picture of her inside from the Sheila Harvey birth episode. Its above Corrie...

I don't think the General Hospital figures are significant as it played at 1.30 in the afternoon,so had a much more limited audience reach than the other two. Regarding Coronation Street,1974-75 is generally considered a below-par period-it's ratings dipped considerably in the latter part of 1975 into '76.When Bill Podmore took over as producer in 1976 he ushered in the show's second"Golden Age"which lasted until 1983-84. By contrast Crossroads was at the peak of it's popularity from 1973 until '76 in terms of winning awards, popularity polls and ratings.

1969-1978 Crossroads wins awards, tho usually Nolly, and we know it only was limited by not being networked as Rossington said "if we were on at 7pm everywhere we'd always be number 1" and she's right.
And of course the fact ATV didn't give it money and had the sabotage. Sacking Noele ect. It would have done better if it had had the company backing like Emmerdale Farm had with YTV, and Granada for Corrie. ATV never with any of their programmes seemed to give them long-term backing.

Nice, be interesting to see. I still wonder why in 1977 Crossroads beat the BBC? Were they on strike?

There were some excellent storylines in 1977 which I have well documented previously, which to me makes a mockery why John Bentley was axed only a year later, when he was involved in the some of the highest ratings episodes of Crossroads beating the BBC.
